Sigmund's Column

Sigmund's Column

This Baroque monument is unique in Europe, as it departs from the traditional model of a ruler's monument. The Column was erected in 1643-1644, designed by Augustino Locci and Constatntino Tencalla. On the Corinthian column (which used to be of red marble), 8.5 m high, is a sculpture of King Sigmund III Vasa (Zygmunt III Vasa), 2.75 m high, in archaic armour.

The column's height, including its pedestal, is 22 meters. The Column fell in January 1945, and was reconstructed in 1948-1949 — the sculpture of the King had been saved and was then placed on a new column, made of granite from the Strzego mine. At that time the Column was moved so as to face Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street.
