During the German occupation 1939-1945, this was a Gestapo prison. Pawiak was known as a place where members of the Polish resistance suffered appalling tortures. Over one hundred thousand Polish citizens: Christians and Jews, were imprisoned in the Pawiak during the World War II, and over thirty thousand lost their lives.
