Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto, west side
The Monument was financed by Jewish organizations and
unveiled in the ruins of the Ghetto on April 19th, 1948, the
fifth anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. On the west
side (shown), this is: "The Struggle", symbolizing fighting
Ghetto Uprisers. A bas-relief, "The Road towards
Extermination", is on the east side. The facing stone of
Swedish labradorite was originally ordered by the Nazis for
a monument to the victory of the Third Reich.
The ghetto was established by the Nazi's in 1940 and reduced
to rubble after the uprising.
