Liberty Pole, a 110-foot flagpole on Marcy Street.
The historic Liberty Pole in Portsmouth is on the grounds
of Prescott Park, facing Strawbery Banke in one direction
and facing the old Point of Graves Cemetery in another
direction.
On top is an eagle and a
large beehive-like liberty cap surrounded by thirteen balls.
The current eagle was carved by Ron Raiselis, made of
mahogany with gold leaf, as a reproduction of the original
Beecher eagle, and installed in 2002. The eagle gleams with
wings spread and feet planted on its globe-perch atop the
flagpole, where it pivots with the wind. Between the Beecher
and Raiselis eagles, there were carvings by George Pitts.
The pole itself has been replaced several times, most
recently in 1984.
