WWI Memorial at Portsmouth Plains
Consists of 26 cement posts, each with a small plaque.
There is a large boulder at
the back of the rows of posts with a larger plaque. Each stone is
carved with the name and rank of the deceased, the years of their
birth and death.
Those honored in the World War I memorial there include Army
doctors, one nurse, Army infantry, pilots, sailors, two Marines, and
one sailor and his ship that have never been found. The 26 grave
markers were purchased by the residents of Portsmouth and originally
dedicated in 1919.
