Firemen's Memorial

Firemen's Memorial

The Firemen's Memorial was commissioned by the Portland Firemen's Monument Association. It was sculpted by Edward Souther Griffin, in 1898, out of gray granite and fabricated by the Hawkes Brothers. The memorial was dedicated on September 5, 1898. It has been installed at its present location in front of the Portland Central Fire Station since 1987.

A 10' high moustached figure of a fireman is dressed in a late 19th century fireman's uniform. He is wearing a long double breasted coat and fireman's helmet. In his left hand he is holding the nozzle of a fire hose. In his right hand he is lifting the hose with the aid of a ring attached to the hose.
