Thomas D'Arcy McGee Monument

Thomas D'Arcy McGee Monument

This statue of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, the only Canadian victim of political assassination at the federal level, is located behind the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, Ontario.

This monument to Thomas D'arcy McGee was created by George William Hill. It was unveiled in 1913, at its location northwest of the Library of Parliament. The bronze statue measures approximately 8 feet high while the granite pedestal and base measure approximately 12 feet high. Both the statues of Thomas Darcy McGee and that of the woman sitting at the base of the monument are approximately 1.5 times lifesize. Inscribed on the pedestal is: "To/A Thomas Darcy McGee 1825-1868". McGee is wearing a shirt, vest and long coat and is holding on to the side of his coat with his right hand. His left hand is opened as if to acknowlege someone coming forth. The woman sitting on the base of the monument appears to be cupping her hand to her ear as if she was intensely listening to what Darcy McGee was saying. She has her hair in a bun and is wearing a flowering gown.
