Baldwin — Lafontaine Monument

Baldwin — Lafontaine Monument

This monument was created by Walter Seymour Allward, best known for his design of the very imposing Canadian Battlefields Memorial in Vimy, France.

Erected in 1914, it is the only monument on Parliament Hill to honour two statesmen at once.

Allward positioned the two bronze figures on a long, gently curved pedestal that brought the figures closer to the viewer, inviting interaction. The statues are over twice life-size. Both Baldwin and Lafontaine are shown wearing forwal dress. They appear to be having a discussion.

This monument is also known as the ‘whispering wall’. If you sit on one end of the bench and whisper into the wall to your friend sitting at the other end of the bench and he/she will hear you quite clearly.
