Monument, Dobó Square

This is one of the most famous historical statue-group of Hungary. Its theme: Battle between Turkish and Hungarian knights, memorial of the most legendary siege of the Medieval Europe. During few weeks the 70000 troopers of the Turkish siege army has been defeated by Istvan Dobo fort-captain and his 2000 castle-defenders. Defenders are consisted of only 1200 regulars and 800 civilians - amongst them lots of women. The story was immortalized by roman of Geza Gardonyi "Stars of Eger" or in other translation "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon". It was in 1552 when imperial dreams of II. Suleiman sultan had been broken on walls of Eger. Captain Dobo addressed to his desperate soldiers before the first siege: "Power of walls is not in the stone, but in souls of the defenders". They were heroes doubtless.
