Boston Marathon Monument
Boston Marathon Monument was installed in Copley
Square, at the intersection of Dartmouth & Bolyston Streets,
within one hundred feet of the marathon finish line in 1996
to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Boston Marathon.
A 7-foot large granite circle covers the brick pavement,
inlaid with a map of the Boston Marathon route. The names of
the winners of the last one hundred years are engraved
around the perimeter of the circle. Surrounding the circle
are four granite bollards, each adorned with a rectangular
bronze relief plaque depicting Boston Marathon participants.
The first plaque depicts two waiving figures representing
the female and male winners. Above them are the words
"BOSTON MARATHON." The second plaque shows a female running
past bystanders. The third plaque shows a male runner being
cheered on by bystanders. The fourth plaque shows a
wheelchair competitor racing in a special three-wheeled
wheelchair. The bollards are also adorned with bronze seals
of the towns along the Boston Marathon route.
