Palace of Culture and Science
The Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw
This huge edifice was erected in 1952-1955, designed by Lew
Rudniew, of stone and limestone. The skyscraper was constructed as a
gift from the Russian people to Poland. The idea of building it was
Stalin's. Its shape is similar to that of Moscow skyscrapers.
When it was built, the Palace was the second highest building in
Europe.
Still the highest building in Poland, it dominates Warsaw and
plays the role of a signpost for tourists who do not know the city. It
still evokes strong reaction — some people are delighted with it,
others want to pull it down as the symbol of Soviet rule over Poland.
