Nathaniel Silsbee House
For over a 100 years, the Knights of Columbus Salem has made its
home in the historic Nathaniel Silsbee House overlooking the Salem
Common. The three story brick mansion was built in 1818/1819 for
Captain Nathaniel Silsbee, Ship master and later U.S. Senator from
Massachusetts. According to Bryant F. Tolles, Jr., in his book
Architecture in Salem; “When Silsbee’s son, Nathaniel Silsbee Jr.,
moved into the house in c. 1850, he made extensive changes in the
Revival Style Home, so it was difficult to know how the house appeared
before that time. Some changes included the Italianate windows on the
façade and the square columned balustrade porch.
