White House of the Confederacy
Executive Mansion (1813)
The Executive Mansion stands just east of the Capitol within the
grounds of Capitol Square. Designed by Boston architect Alexander
Parris, the Federal-era mansion has been the official residence of
Virginia governors and their families since its completion in March
1813. It is the oldest governor's mansion in the nation still being
used for its original purpose, and many presidents and foreign
dignitaries have been entertained here.
