Mount Pleasant/b>
on the east bank of the Schuylkill River now in Fairmount Park
The "grand dame" of Fairmount Park houses, Mount Pleasant has
been known for over 225 years as one America's great architectural
gems — even our second president, John Adams concurred. The colorful
Scottish sea captain and American patriot, John McPherson built the
house and two outbuildings in a Scottish interpretation of the
Georgian style.
You may have heard of a couple of Mount Pleasant's owners:
Benedict Arnold, who bought the house for his fiancee, and Jonathan
Williams, Ben Franklin's great nephew and the first superintendent of
West Point.
