Old Mill

The Newport Tower (also known as: Round Tower, Touro Tower, Newport Stone Tower, and Old Stone Mill) is a round stone tower located in Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island, the remains of a windmill built in the mid-17th century. It has received attention due to speculation that it is actually several centuries older and would thus represent evidence of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. Carbon dating shows this belief to be incorrect.

the historic old Stone Mill or "Round Tower," which Longfellow, in accordance with the contention of certain members of the Society of Danish Antiquarians, ascribes, in his Skeleton in Armour, to the Norsemen, but which Benedict Arnold (1615-1678), governor of Rhode Island, repeatedly mentions in his will as "my Stone-built Wind-Mill."

Dr. William Ellery Channing (1780-1842) was the foremost Unitarian preacher in the United States in the early nineteenth century and one of Unitarianism's leading theologians. He was known for his articulate and impassioned sermons and public speeches, and as a prominent thinker in the liberal theology of the day.

Channing was born in Newport, Rhode Island, a descendant of signer William Ellery. He became a New England liberal, rejecting the Calvinist doctrines of total depravity and divine election.
