All Souls Church
Halifax NB
Situated close to Halifax town centre All Souls was commissioned
in 1856 by Edward Akroyd (a wealthy mill owner) and designed by George
Gilbert Scott. The style incorporates features of the late Early
English and early Decorated periods and is of a unified design inside
and out. Completed in 1859 at the height of Scott's career, and said
to be one of his finest churches, it became a key feature in the model
estate still surrounding it today. Also designed by Scott, the estate
included Akroyd's own house and landscaped gardens (now a museum and
public park), a vicarage and dwellings for his employees.
